Fortress of Bellinzona (Castelgrande)

Bellinzona, Ticino

THE LOWDOWN

The big one — literally. Bellinzona isn’t just one castle, it’s three: Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro, all linked together with defensive walls known as the Murata, which were built to completely block off the Ticino valley and control every scrap of traffic heading over the Gotthard pass. The hill Castelgrande sits on has been settled by humans for a genuinely wild 6,000 years, going right back to the Neolithic period.

ROUND THE CASTLE

The whole complex was massively built up by the Dukes of Milan between the 13th and 15th centuries, because whoever controlled Bellinzona controlled the gateway between northern and southern Europe, which made it worth an enormous amount of investment in walls, towers and fortifications. The Swiss finally took the castles over in 1500, the site somehow survived a huge flood in 1515, and by 1803 the whole thing had become the property of Canton Ticino. In November 2000, UNESCO recognised the entire fortress complex — all three castles plus the walls and ramparts — as a World Heritage Site, calling it out as the only example in the whole Alpine region of a medieval military complex built from multiple castles plus a valley-blocking wall plus intact town fortifications, all still standing together.

THE LITTLE TITBIT

Today the castle walls are lined with actual working vineyards, growing merlot grapes tended by the local agricultural society, which means this thousand-year-old military stronghold built to strangle an entire trade route now moonlights as a rather lovely vineyard with a restaurant serving Michelin-recognised food inside the walls. From blocking armies to serving wine and pairing menus — now that’s what I call a glow-up.

Hi!
